Mariana Trench
Mariana Trench
Mariana Trench is a four member band of native Chicago musicians.
The band's style has evolved from their start in 1992 when they
began playing together as Orange Julius. A year leater, with some
band member changes, they were Sidley Shows and had self-produced
and engineered their first CD EP at Eko Recordings in Chicago.
The EP, entitled "Whatever Shines" incorporated some
of their best and newest material. Their music was well liked
and the title track received airplay on WKQX-FM's "Q101 Local
Music Showcase". Two other songs from this EP, "Ride"
and "Jackie", are featured on the soundtrack of "The
Pros and Cons of Breathing", an independent film directed
by Robert Munic, that had its debut at the 1993 Chicago Film Festival.
The band caught the attention of Acme Entertainment, Inc. in
the fall of 1993. By the Spring of 1994, the band was called Mariana
Trench, they had a new drummer and a new rhythm guitarist, they
were signed to the label, and already in rehearsals perparing
for the recording of their first album. "Subsuasion",
the first CD LP recorded for Acme, served both band and label
well. Some of the highlights from the past year include:
Debuting in CMJ magazine at #6 in the country in
adds
Getting airplay on over 200 radio stations nation-wide
Hitting the charts at 26 college radio stations
Getting invited to play at the Hard Rock Cafe at
Universal Studios in FL
An in-store live performance at a Blockbuster Music
store
Headlining the 54th Annual VEISHEA Festival in
Ames, IA
Performing at the 3rd Independent Label Festival
and Freefest in Chicago
Early in 1995, more band member changes. The three original
players remaining, Ben, Greg, and Ryan, decide to strip down to
one guitarist and begin, what seemed like a never-ending search
for a new drummer. During the searching process, they played gigs
with Stewy, the steel drumm from Fat Nut (their label mates).
Time came to start album two, and still no drummer. So, they
asked Stewy and another friend, Chris, to join them in the studio.
All the while, still searching for a replacement. He showed up
in the form of Mark. He was an easy fit musically, and they set
about bringing him up to speed.
Today, the band has worked its way into regular rotation at
some of Chicago and the midwest's premier rock venues including:
Metro, Double Door, Dome Room, The Elbo Room, The Paramount Music
Hall, and The Maintenance Shop. With the release of their self-titled
second album, the band is now concentrating on touring. They've
already had a great response at college radio and are currently
supporting this airplay through a nationwide tour.
